“Continuous improvement” is a familiar phrase at This Company. There’s no denying that more and better training can help us to do our jobs more efficiently and with better results. But here’s another familiar phrase… “I don’t have time!”
Training usually requires leaving your work area and responsibilities for a period of time – and that’s usually not convenient. Fortunately, This Company can now offer training that’s flexible and effective. The program, called Company College, is currently available to 100 employees. The online library includes more than 900 available training courses in management, leadership, team building, communications, personal development, project management, customer service, accounting, marketing, sales, human resources, and operations.
“Employees have been asking for more training,” said Someone, This Company’s Director of Human Resources. “Company College offers a cost-effective solution for us. It’s flexible, it can be accessed any time from work or home, and it eliminates the need for travel.”
The first 100 employees selected for Company College include managers and supervisors at each of This Company’s plants. This Company has selected seven basic courses for each of them to complete by the end of the year. Course times vary from one and one-half to four hours.
“We realize that everybody is busy,” said Somebody. “Our hope is that Company College will help provide quality training that’s easy to access.” The selected employees can complete half of the required courses at work during working hours and the rest on personal time from any computer with Web access.
Employee A, Manufacturing Supervisor, admits that he was skeptical when Company College was introduced. “But then I looked at the format, took the orientation, and decided that this could be a useful tool for building and applying my skills,” he said. He started by taking what he thought would be the most useful course to begin with – Set Goals and Prioritize the Use of Your Time. “This was great because it helped me to plan the rest of the lessons and set a goal for completion.”
Employee A is now well on his way to completing the seven required courses, and he’s convinced that Company College is a valuable resource. “Company College has helped me to stop and look at how I do my job every day,” explained Employee A. “We are all busy and have lots to do. This is just one of the tools that allows us to produce results that will improve our process and our business.”
This Company began its one-year trial of Company College in July. The employees participating in the trial will have unlimited access to all of the training courses offered and can complete as many as desired. “This is the first time This Company has invested in an online training program,” said Somebody. “So far, most users have been very enthusiastic. If this proves to be of benefit to these initial participants, we may consider expanding the program to more of This Company’s employees.”
