Lipstick

I was thinking about lipstick today...

When I was in my twenties, I worked with a lady who had perfect lipstick. Through coffee breaks, lunch, and even pencil-chewing, that lipstick was always there, shaping, smoothing, sparkling. I checked her napkin once to see if the stuff actually came off. It did, but not for long. Even more amazing to me was the fact that her lips and her nails always matched. This, I knew, was a feat beyond my abilities, but I considered lipstick within my reach.

Of course I have a drawer full of lipstick –- some of it probably dates back to my college days -- but I can’t seem to remember to put it on. I’ll admit there are days when I’ve left the house with mascara applied to only one eye. As I’ve matured, I’ve had to pick my priorities, and make-up doesn’t seem to be one of them.

But today at the bank I was confronted by another set of superbly colored lips, and I felt that old anxiety creeping back. Then, with a twinge of unease, I wondered if there’s any truth to the rumor about cow brains lurking in lipstick. I remember my eighth-grade science teacher gleefully announcing that perfume actually contains whale barf. I have my doubts, but I’m perfectly content to continue dousing myself with my favorite fragrances. But applying cow brains to my lips? That’s not quite as exotic as beluga bile. In fact, it sounds quite mad!

Until I’m certain what’s in my lipstick, I’ve resolved to remain satisfied with good old waxy lip balm. But now I’m wondering if there’s any truth to the rumor about rat hairs in my mascara.
